3 Eco-Friendly Moving Tips

Posted on: 4 February 2022

Whether you are moving to get closer to your new workstation or a better neighborhood, moving is inevitable in life. In fact, an average American moves at least 11 times in their lifetime. Unfortunately, most people aren't aware of the environmental impact of their moving process.

If you want to do your part on environmental protection, take a look at these eco-friendly moving habits.

Use Eco-Friendly Packing Supplies

You contribute significantly to a cleaner environment when you use biodegradable and recyclable packing materials. For instance, you can use plastic boxes from recycled materials to pack your things. The good thing about these boxes is that you can reuse them numerous times. They'll also sustain very little damage, which makes them a good investment.

Old cardboard boxes also come in handy as you move. If the ones you have aren't enough for your stuff, you can borrow boxes that your friends don't use. Also, use blankets, kraft paper, or newsprint to pad your items. Instead of moving blankets, use towels, duvets, or sheets to pack your boxes. When you use the materials you already have at home, you save money and reduce extra waste that might wind up in the environment.

Sell, Recycle or Donate the Items You Don't Need

As you start to pack, you might come across numerous items that you'd like to get rid of –– from clothes to furniture and kitchen items. If you have some personal things in excellent condition that you would like to sell, you can hold several garage sales before the big move.

Also, use online platforms, such as Facebook Marketplace, to sell homeware and furniture locally. Alternatively, you can donate your things to charity, animal shelters, libraries, or schools.

Also, if you have old electronics (such as batteries, old phones, and outdated gadgets), you can drop them off at a local recycling center. If you have a huge pile of old papers and documents, you can shred them and take them to a nearby paper recycling center.

Hire Eco-Friendly Movers

Ensure that you hire a local eco-friendly moving company with policies that aim to protect the environment. Most eco-friendly companies use fuel-efficient trucks that utilize biodiesel fuel instead of conventional gasoline. These companies also use GPS tools to determine the most fuel-efficient route for a sustainable move.

Also, check if the company uses biodegradable packing materials and reusable bins, boxes, or containers. Some companies actually offer to buy back all unutilized packing materials or recycle them for free after you unpack.

You can implement these tips to achieve an eco-friendly move. If environmental conservation is important to you, don't hesitate to hire a reputable local moving company dedicated to a cleaner environment.
